To take place at Borwick Hall in North Lancashire from 12th to 15th August 2018

This 3-night residential course is aimed at those who are already registered to use the Bat Survey Class Licence at level 1 (CL17).  A mix of classroom sessions and field work will allow you to develop and practice the skills required for the level 2 licence, including safe use of an endoscope, bat handling, catching bats in hand-held net and identification of bats in the hand.

A continuous assessment of each trainee will be made. A reference and course completion certificate will be given at the full discretion of the tutors. If given, this will allow you to apply to use Bat Survey Class Licence at Level 2 (CL18).  

Delivered by three experienced bat trainers - Gail Armstrong, Jo Gregory and David Marshall – and following a successful pilot course last year, we now offer another opportunity for experienced level one bat surveyors to progress to level 2.

This is our most popular course as it offers guaranteed opportunities to handle native bats.

It is a one-day course aimed at those who work with bats in a professional capacity and want to improve their bat handling and bat species identification skills. Items covered include -

The course will run on three dates in early 2018 before the main bat season begins. This year, we are trying a new venue at Leighton Moss RSPB Reserve in the North West of England.

Bat Survey Level 2 Class Licence Training Course

21st to 24th August 2017 at Borwick Hall Outdoor Education Centre in North Lancashire

A three night fully residential course which will develop and practice the skills required to upgrade from Bat Survey Class Licence Level 1 (CL17) to Level 2 (CL18).

This course is only open to existing holders of a Bat Survey Licence at Level 1. There will be continual assessment during the course to ensure that your skills and knowledge are at the requisite level. A reference will be provided on successful completion of the course.

Bats for Beginners

An afternoon and evening for anyone who is new to bats! The course covers bats worldwide, bat ecology, local bat species, bat identification, bats and the law and bat sound. After the course there is an evening walk with bat detectors.

Gail has run this course for Cumbria Wildlife Trust, the West Yorkshire Bat Group and the North Lancashire Bat Group.

Bat Survey Class Licence Training

This course ran successfully over 2014/15 with eight particpants being mentored over a year and all being given two references to apply for Bat Class Licence CL18 at the end.

We have not decided when to run the course again (as of March 2017)

Details of Previous Course

A brand new course which will run on weekends in August 2014, November 2014 and May 2015. If successfully completed it will lead to a reference to accompany your application for a Level 2 Class Survey Licence.

The course is residential and all three units must be completed in order for us to consider giving you a reference. Since this course is not aimed at absolute beginners, we ask for a PERSONAL STATEMENT of your bat experience as part of the application process.

Bats and Trees

A one-day course for those working with trees. The course covers bat ecology, local species, how bats use trees and bats and the law. It includes practical exercises to assess trees for bat potential.

Gail has run this course for National Trust foresters and wardens.

Other courses Gail can provide include bat identification workshops, bat care workshops, bat sound and analysis and surveying stone buildings or, if you prefer, a course tailored to your specific requirements.
